Vanilla comes from the fruit of an orchid

Vanilla extract comes from the long fruit, often called a pod, of the Vanilla planifolia orchid. Each flower stays open for less than a day, but a pollinated flower can grow one of those fragrant pods.

The flower is lovely. The long green pod is where vanilla has been hiding.
