A cameo uses the natural color layers inside one stone
Cameos are carved in raised relief from layered stones such as onyx, sardonyx, or agate. A carver removes parts of the upper layers so a light figure can stand out against a darker background.
The flower and its background were already in the same stone. The carver introduced them.
