Sgraffito decoration is drawn by scratching through a pale clay coat
For sgraffito pottery, a maker covers reddish clay with a lighter liquid clay called slip. A sharp tool scratches the design through the pale layer so the darker clay shows underneath.
A tool takes color away, and a leaf appears. Pottery has excellent reverse drawing.
