Medieval embroiderers could transfer a design with dotted charcoal lines
A maker pricked tiny holes along a drawing, placed it over the fabric, and rubbed fine charcoal through the holes. The dotted guide was then covered with colored silk stitches and carefully secured gold thread.
Long before tracing paper, a row of pinpricks knew where every leaf should go.
