Hoar frost can grow feathery ice without first becoming dew
On a clear, calm night, a surface can cool below freezing while moisture remains in the air. Water vapor can turn directly into tiny ice crystals on that surface, forming the feathery coating called hoar frost.
By morning, one cold twig can be wearing a whole row of little ice feathers.
