A sand dune can move several feet in one windy day
Strong winds push individual sand grains in short hops and pile them onto the other side of a dune. At White Sands, that steady movement can shift a dune several feet over a windy day or night.
The dune keeps its wave-like shape while the whole hill inches across the desert.
