Cooling lava can crack into giant stone columns
After a thick lava flow solidifies, it keeps cooling and shrinking. Cracks can spread inward in polygonal patterns, dividing the rock into long columns that often have five or six sides.
A river of lava settles down and leaves behind a bundle of enormous stone pencils.
