Desert varnish paints dark ribbons down pale cliffs
Desert varnish is a very thin coating that forms on stable rock surfaces. Its clay minerals, iron and manganese can come from flowing water, windblown dust and activity by tiny organisms.
The cliff gets its dark brushstrokes from dust, minerals and a little desert weather.
