Petrified wood is a tree-shaped piece of quartz
When buried wood is protected from quick decay, mineral-rich water can carry silica into its tiny spaces. The silica crystallizes as the original material breaks down, preserving much of the wood's structure in quartz.
It still looks like a log, but sunlight now finds glitter in the grain.
