The sand at White Sands began as clear gypsum crystals
Water carries dissolved gypsum into the Tularosa Basin, where it can recrystallize as selenite when the water evaporates. Wind and water break those crystals into smaller grains and polish them into brilliant white sand.
A mountain mineral took the scenic route and arrived as a field of white dunes.
