Freezing water helps carve Bryce Canyon's stone spires
Water enters small cracks in the rock at Bryce Canyon and expands when it freezes. Repeated freezing, thawing and rain slowly shape walls into windows and then into the tall spires called hoodoos.
The result looks like a quiet crowd of stone mushrooms wearing little hats.
