A hot spring can build its own stone staircase
At Mammoth Hot Springs, hot water rises through limestone and carries dissolved calcium carbonate. When the water reaches the surface and releases carbon dioxide, that mineral settles out as pale travertine terraces.
The water keeps adding a thin new edge to every chalk-white step.
