A thin coat of iron gives Zion's sandstone its warm colors
Navajo Sandstone began as light quartz sand. Tiny amounts of iron in the grains oxidized and coated them with iron oxide, creating shades of red, pink, salmon and gold.
The canyon borrowed a little rust and turned it into a whole warm palette.
