A peanut flower sends its future pod underground
Peanut flowers open above the soil. After a flower is fertilized, its ovary grows downward on a slender structure called a peg, enters the ground and develops into a peanut pod below the surface.
The yellow flower appears in the sunshine; the peanut quietly finishes growing below.
