Ice crystals can open a round window in a cloud
A fallstreak hole begins when some supercooled droplets in a thin cloud freeze into ice crystals. The crystals grow and fall while nearby droplets evaporate, leaving a circular or oval gap that widens outward.
One small icy change opens a blue window in the cloud sheet.
