A paper watermark begins as wire on the mould
Papermakers shaped fine wire into a design and attached it to the mould used to lift wet pulp. The raised wire left a thinner pattern in the finished sheet that appears when light passes through it.
The paper keeps a small picture hidden in its own fibers until the light arrives.
