Some books were made from palm leaves threaded on a cord
Traditional Indian palm-leaf manuscripts used long, trimmed leaves as separate pages. Holes in the leaves held a binding cord, while wooden boards protected the stack above and below.
The pages stay in a tidy stack, wearing their covers like two wooden bookends.
