Medieval ultramarine blue began as lapis lazuli
Natural ultramarine pigment was made by separating and grinding the blue mineral in lapis lazuli. It was one of the most expensive colors used in medieval European manuscript painting.
Before it was paint, that brilliant blue was a stone with very good color sense.
