Papyrus was made from two crossed layers of plant strips
Papyrus makers laid thin strips from the plant side by side, then placed a second layer across the first. Moisture and pressing helped the layers bond into a sheet, usually without added glue.
One layer runs north to south, one east to west, and together they become a page.
