Wallpaper once pretended to be marble and carved plaster
From the mid-eighteenth century, printed architectural wallpapers copied marble, masonry, wood grain and raised plaster decoration. They could give a room the look of stucco without the echo or the wait for wet plaster to dry.
The room looks dressed in stone. It is actually wearing paper.
