Dutch tilemakers copied designs with charcoal dust
Tilemakers pricked tiny holes along a drawing, laid the paper over a glazed tile and tapped it with a porous bag of charcoal. The dust passed through the holes, leaving a dotted outline ready to paint.
A tiny charcoal cloud left a path for every windmill and flower.
