Mustard once arrived in a tiny silver jug
Eighteenth-century mustard could be served dry or mixed with vinegar into a paste. Pots for the mixed sauce often looked like very small lidded milk jugs, complete with a handle and spout.
The mustard got a lid, a handle and a jug of its own—small condiment, excellent entrance.
