Egyptian blue was made by heating sand, lime, alkali, and copper
Ancient makers mixed those materials and fired them until they formed blue, glassy lumps. The lumps could then be ground into a bright blue pigment for painting.
A handful of pale ingredients went into the heat and came out blue.
