Maya blue joins plant dye and clay into one lasting color
Maya artists combined indigo dye with a porous clay called palygorskite and added heat. The dye entered the clay's structure, creating an unusually durable turquoise-blue pigment.
A leaf color and a pale clay became stronger together.
