Artists once grew green pigment on copper with vinegar vapor
To make verdigris, makers suspended copper above vinegar or fermenting grape skins. The acidic vapor reacted with the metal and formed a blue-green crust that could be scraped off for pigment.
The color arrived slowly, like a tiny green garden on the metal.
