Cochineal can turn a tiny cactus insect into brilliant crimson
Cochineal color comes from female scale insects that live on prickly pear cacti. Their carminic acid can be extracted to make a strong red dye or a transparent red pigment.
A very small visitor leaves an astonishing amount of red behind.
