Smalt is blue glass ground into paint pigment
Glass colored blue with cobalt was crushed and ground to make smalt. European painters mixed the glassy powder into paint, especially from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries.
A piece of blue glass became a sky one grain at a time.
